Primary alcohols oxidise (acidified K₂Cr₂O₇, orange → green) to aldehydes (distil off) then carboxylic acids (reflux); secondary to ketones; tertiary resist oxidation. Dehydration with concentrated acid gives alkenes; esterification with acids gives esters.
