- Metallurgy and the iron–carbon diagram Metals are crystalline: body-centred cubic (BCC – ferrite, chromium), face-centred cubic (FCC – austenite, aluminium, copper; more ductile), and close-packed hexagonal (zinc, magnesium). Grains form as metal solidifies; smaller grains give higher strength and toughness. Dislocations moving along slip planes allow plastic deformation; cold working increases dislocation density (work hardening).
- Heat treatment and material testing Annealing copper and brass (work hardening removed), precipitation (age) hardening of aluminium alloys.
- Machining and CNC Operations: facing, parallel turning, taper turning (compound slide, taper turning attachment, tailstock offset), drilling, boring, knurling, parting off and screw cutting.
- Fabrication and welding technology Butt, lap, tee, corner and edge joints; flat, horizontal, vertical and overhead positions; edge preparation (single-V, double-V).
