Short stories focus on a single main event, few characters and one key theme.

Features

  • A quick opening that hooks the reader.
  • Limited setting and time span.
  • A turning point or twist, often near the end.
  • Economy: every detail matters.

Analysing a short story

  • What is the central conflict?
  • How does the opening set the mood?
  • What is the significance of the title?
  • How does the ending affect the meaning – resolved, open or ironic?
  • What techniques create tension (short sentences, dialogue, foreshadowing)?

Comparing stories

When an anthology is set, compare stories that share a theme (e.g. family, poverty, injustice): how each writer presents it, through which characters and techniques.

Exam tip: The title of a short story often holds a key to its meaning – always comment on it.
