Fractions

  • Equivalent fractions: ½ = 2/4 = 3/6.
  • Simplify by dividing top and bottom by the same number: 12/16 = ¾.
  • Mixed numbers and improper fractions: 2⅓ = 7/3.
  • Add and subtract using a common denominator: ½ + ⅓ = 3/6 + 2/6 = 5/6.
  • Multiply: multiply tops and bottoms: ⅔ × ¾ = 6/12 = ½.
  • Divide: turn the second fraction upside down and multiply: ½ ÷ ¼ = ½ × 4 = 2.

Decimals

Place value: tenths, hundredths, thousandths. 0.75 = 75/100 = ¾.

Percentages

Per cent means "out of 100". 25% = 25/100 = ¼ = 0.25.

Worked example: Find 15% of 80.

15/100 × 80 = 12

Worked example: A learner scored 36 out of 40. What percentage is that?

36/40 × 100 = 90%

Converting

Fraction → decimal: divide (⅜ = 0.375). Decimal → percentage: multiply by 100 (0.6 = 60%).

Exam tip: Learn the common ones by heart: ½ = 0.5 = 50%, ¼ = 0.25 = 25%, ⅕ = 0.2 = 20%, ⅒ = 0.1 = 10%.
