Government
The government makes and carries out laws and provides services. It has three arms:
- The Executive (the President, Vice-Presidents and Cabinet ministers) – runs the country.
- The Legislature (Parliament: National Assembly and Senate) – makes laws.
- The Judiciary (courts and judges) – interprets laws and settles disputes.
Local government
Urban councils (city and town councils) and rural district councils provide local services such as water, roads, clinics, markets and refuse collection. Councillors are elected by residents in each ward. Traditional leaders (chiefs, headmen and village heads) help keep order and resolve disputes in rural areas.
Elections and democracy
Citizens aged 18 and above can register and vote. Elections are run by the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission.
The Constitution
The supreme law of Zimbabwe (adopted in 2013); it contains the Declaration of Rights.
Good citizenship
Obeying laws, paying taxes (adults), respecting national symbols, voting, protecting public property and caring for the environment.
