Assembly drawings

Show how parts fit together in their working positions: a sectional assembly with a parts list (item number, name, material, quantity) and balloons referencing each part.

Detail drawings

Each part drawn separately with full dimensions, tolerances, materials and finishes – ready for manufacture.

Machine elements

  • Fasteners: bolts, nuts (locknuts, slotted nuts with split pins), studs, set screws, washers, keys and keyways, rivets.
  • Shafts and couplings, bearings (plain and rolling element), pulleys and belt drives, gears (spur, helical, bevel, worm), springs and cams.
  • Pipe fittings and valves.

Reading drawings

Interpret orthographic and sectional views to visualise the assembly, then produce the requested views (often a sectional elevation from given part drawings).

Exploded views

Pictorial views showing parts separated along their assembly axes, used in instruction manuals.

Exam tip: Plan the layout of an assembly drawing on the sheet before drawing – start with the largest part and its centre lines.

Check yourself

  1. What information is given in a parts list?
  2. What is the purpose of a split pin with a slotted nut?
  3. Distinguish between an assembly drawing and a detail drawing.
Show answers
  1. Item number, part name, material and quantity (sometimes standard references).
  2. To lock the nut and prevent it from loosening.
  3. An assembly drawing shows parts fitted together; a detail drawing gives full manufacturing information for a single part.
