Management and leadership
Functions of management (Fayol, Mintzberg's roles); leadership styles (autocratic, democratic, laissez-faire); McGregor's Theory X and Y; emotional intelligence (Goleman).
Motivation
Taylor, Mayo, Maslow, Herzberg, McClelland and Vroom's expectancy theory; financial and non-financial methods (job enrichment, empowerment, teamworking, quality circles).
HR management
Workforce planning, recruitment and selection, training, appraisal, labour turnover, employment contracts, flexible working, redundancy and dismissal; labour legislation; trade unions and collective bargaining; conciliation and arbitration.
Worked example: A firm has 240 staff on average; 36 leave during the year. Find labour turnover and comment.
36 ÷ 240 × 100 = 15% – a high rate raises recruitment and training costs and may indicate poor motivation
Organisational structure
Hierarchy, span of control, delegation, centralisation and decentralisation, matrix structures, flat and tall structures.
Check yourself
- According to Herzberg, what are hygiene factors?
- What is Vroom's expectancy theory about?
- Give one advantage of a matrix structure.
Show answers
- Factors (pay, conditions, security) that prevent dissatisfaction but do not motivate on their own.
- Motivation depends on expectancy, instrumentality and valence – the belief that effort leads to valued rewards.
- Specialists from different departments work together, improving flexibility and communication.
