Safety on site
Personal protective equipment: hard hat, safety boots, gloves, overalls, high-visibility vest, goggles and dust masks. Keep the site tidy; fence off trenches; use sound ladders and scaffolds; store materials safely; handle cement carefully (it burns skin).
Building approval
Plans must be approved by the local authority (urban or rural district council) before building. Inspectors check foundations, damp-proof course and drainage at each stage.
Site clearance
Remove vegetation, topsoil and debris; mark the position of the building.
Setting out
Transferring the plan onto the ground.
- Pegs and builders' lines mark the building lines.
- The 3-4-5 method makes a right angle: if two sides measure 3 m and 4 m, the diagonal must be 5 m.
- Check that diagonals of a rectangle are equal.
- Profiles (boards on pegs) outside the building hold the lines for foundations and walls.
- Use a spirit level, water level or dumpy level to establish levels.
Worked example: A rectangular house is set out 10 m by 8 m. What should each diagonal measure?
√(10² + 8²) = √164 ≈ 12.81 m – both diagonals must be equal.
Check yourself
- Name four items of personal protective equipment for a building site.
- Explain the 3-4-5 method.
- Why must building plans be approved by the council?
Show answers
- Any four: hard hat, boots, gloves, overalls, high-visibility vest, goggles, dust mask.
- Measure 3 units along one line and 4 along the other; when the diagonal between them is 5, the angle is 90°.
- To ensure the building is safe, meets standards and fits planning rules.
