Forms of business ownership
Sole trader, partnership, private limited company, cooperative. Each has different rules for liability, ownership and registration.
Registering a business in Zimbabwe
- Companies are registered with the Registrar of Companies (Companies and Other Business Entities Act).
- Local authorities issue shop or trading licences (rural district councils and urban councils).
- Some activities need special licences (food handling, liquor, transport).
- Register for tax with the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (ZIMRA) when required.
Why comply with the law
Avoid fines and closure, access loans and contracts, build customer trust, and contribute to public services through taxes.
Employment and consumer laws
Employers must follow labour laws on wages, working hours, safety and fair treatment (the Labour Act), and register with the National Social Security Authority (NSSA). Businesses must treat customers fairly under the Consumer Protection Act.
Contracts
A contract is a legally binding agreement: offer, acceptance, consideration (something of value), and the intention to be bound. Keep written agreements with suppliers and partners.
