Communication

Methods: postal services, courier services, telephone and mobile phones, email, the internet, video conferencing, social media. Choosing a method: speed, cost, confidentiality, record, distance. Effects of technology on commerce (e-commerce, mobile money).

Transport

Modes: road, rail, air, sea and pipeline; factors in choosing (cost, speed, nature of goods, distance, reliability, safety); containerisation (less handling, theft and damage; faster loading); ports and airports; transport documents.

Warehousing

Functions (storage, protection, preparation of goods, seasonal supply, price stability); types (manufacturers', wholesalers', retailers', public and bonded warehouses); location and features of modern warehouses (automation, bar codes, fork-lift trucks).

Worked example: Recommend a mode of transport for 500 tonnes of copper from an inland mine to a port.

Rail – cheap for heavy, bulky goods over long distances.

Exam tip: Always justify transport choices by linking the mode to the type of goods.
