Sketching
Freehand sketches with light construction lines; annotation (notes) explaining materials, sizes and functions.
Drawing methods
- Isometric (30°) and oblique (45°) pictorial views.
- Orthographic projection (front, end and plan views) for working drawings.
- Exploded views show how parts fit together; sectional views show inside details.
Rendering
Shading, colour and texture make drawings realistic and show materials (wood grain, shiny metal).
Modelling
Card, foam, clay or 3D-printed models test size, shape and function before making the final product. Computer models (CAD) can be rotated and tested on screen.
Presentation
Present ideas clearly to clients using a design folder or portfolio, with labelled sketches, charts and photographs of models.
Exam tip: Annotation turns a sketch into a design idea – explain WHY, not only WHAT.

Show answers
- A drawing showing parts separated but in line, to show how they fit together.

- Notes added to sketches explaining ideas, materials, sizes and functions.
