Christianity

ZIMSEC O Level · Family and Religious Studies · Form 1, Form 2, Form 3, Form 4

Christianity is based on the life and teachings of Jesus Christ. Its holy book is the Bible (Old and New Testaments).

Beliefs

  • One God revealed as Father, Son and Holy Spirit (the Trinity).
  • Jesus is the Son of God, who died and rose again to save humanity from sin.
  • Salvation through faith, love and forgiveness.

The teachings of Jesus

  • Love God and love your neighbour as yourself.
  • The Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5–7): the Beatitudes, forgiveness, humility, and treating others as you wish to be treated.
  • Parables such as the Good Samaritan (care for all people) and the Prodigal Son (forgiveness).

Practices

Prayer, Bible reading, worship on Sundays (or Saturdays for some denominations), baptism and Holy Communion, and festivals such as Christmas (birth of Jesus) and Easter (death and resurrection).

Christianity in Zimbabwe

Brought by missionaries in the 19th century (Inyati Mission, 1859). Denominations include Catholic, Anglican, Methodist and Seventh-day Adventist churches, Pentecostal churches and African Independent Churches (such as the Zion and Apostolic churches). Churches run schools and hospitals.
