Morality, values and social issues

ZIMSEC O Level · Family and Religious Studies · Form 3, Form 4

Morality is about knowing right from wrong. Religions provide rules and values that guide behaviour.

Sources of moral guidance

Holy books (Bible, Qur'an), religious leaders, elders and traditions, conscience, laws of the country.

Social issues and religious responses

  • HIV and AIDS: religions teach abstinence before marriage and faithfulness, care and compassion for the sick, and reducing stigma.
  • Drug and substance abuse: harms health and families; religions teach self-control and respect for the body.
  • Gender-based violence and gender equality: all religions teach respect and the dignity of every person; harmful practices such as child marriage are condemned and illegal.
  • Corruption: honesty and justice are core values in all faiths.
  • Poverty: charity (Zakah, tithes, community support) and helping the needy.
  • The environment: humans are stewards of creation; ATR taboos and totems protect nature.

Human rights

Rights such as life, dignity and freedom of religion are protected by the Constitution. Religions support these values while teaching responsibility.

Exam tip: Use a clear structure: state the issue, explain the religious teaching, then give a practical response.
