Parts of speech

Every language has naming words (nouns), action words (verbs), describing words (adjectives), words that replace nouns (pronouns) and joining words (conjunctions). Learn the correct terms used in your language.

Noun classes

Bantu languages such as ChiShona and isiNdebele group nouns into classes, usually shown by prefixes. The prefix changes in the plural. Learn the singular and plural forms in your language.

Tenses

Present, past and future tense are shown by changes to the verb. Practise changing sentences from one tense to another.

Agreement

Adjectives, verbs and pronouns agree with the noun class of the noun they go with.

Spelling and orthography

Use the official spelling rules of your language (for example, how words are joined or separated, and which letters are used for certain sounds).

Sentence construction

Word order, statements, questions and commands; joining sentences with conjunctions.

Exam tip: Practise grammar exercises from your class textbook – the rules differ between languages, so learn your language's own terms.
