Sport in society, leadership and careers

ZIMSEC O Level · Physical Education, Sport and Mass Displays · Form 3, Form 4

Benefits of sport

Health and fitness, social skills, discipline, national identity, entertainment, jobs and tourism (major events bring visitors).

Organisation of sport in Zimbabwe

  • The Sports and Recreation Commission oversees sport.
  • National associations run individual sports (for example ZIFA for football).
  • School sport is organised through school, district, provincial and national competitions.
  • International bodies: FIFA (football), World Athletics, and the International Olympic Committee.

Leadership in sport

Captains, coaches and officials need communication, fairness, decision-making, motivation and organisation skills. Sportsmanship means respecting opponents, officials and rules, and winning or losing graciously.

Issues

Violence and hooliganism, corruption and match-fixing, doping, lack of facilities and funding, and gender inequality in sport. Inclusive sport provides opportunities for people with disabilities (Paralympic sports).

Careers

Professional athlete, coach, PE teacher, referee, sports administrator, physiotherapist, sports journalist, fitness instructor and sports scientist.

Exam tip: Use Zimbabwean examples – national teams, local tournaments or school competitions.
