Woodworking machines and the design project

ZIMSEC O Level · Wood Technology and Design · Form 3, Form 4

Machines

  • Circular saw: ripping and cross-cutting.
  • Band saw: curves and resawing.
  • Planer-thicknesser: flattening and reducing to thickness.
  • Pillar drill: accurate holes.
  • Lathe: turning bowls, legs and handles.
  • Portable power tools: jigsaw, router, electric drill, sander.

Machines save time and give accuracy but are dangerous: follow all safety rules.

Mass production aids

Jigs (guide tools) and templates make repeated parts accurately and quickly.

The design project

  1. Design brief and research.
  2. Specification (size, materials, cost, function, appearance).
  3. Ideas and development sketches.
  4. Working drawing and cutting list (with sizes and materials).
  5. Plan of making (sequence of operations, tools and time).
  6. Making the project.
  7. Testing and evaluation, with suggestions for improvement.

Cutting list

Lists each part, the number required, length × width × thickness and material. Add a little extra length for waste.

Exam tip: A clear plan of making with the correct order of operations earns high marks in coursework.

Check yourself

  1. Which machine is used to turn wood into round shapes?
  2. What is a jig?
  3. Name four items shown on a cutting list.
Show answers
  1. The wood lathe.
  2. A device that holds work and guides a tool so repeated parts are made accurately.
  3. Any four: part name, number, length, width, thickness, material.
