Speak clearly and loudly enough, use polite language, make eye contact, organise your ideas, and take turns in discussions.
Situations
- Greetings and introductions.
- Giving and following directions and instructions.
- Telephone conversations: greet, say who you are, give the message clearly, end politely.

- Speeches and presentations: introduction, main points, conclusion.
- Reading aloud with expression.
Polite language
"Please", "Thank you", "Excuse me", "May I…?", "I'm sorry".
Worked example: How would you politely ask a teacher to repeat something?
"Excuse me, Madam, could you please repeat that?"
Exam tip: Practise speaking in front of a mirror or a friend before a class presentation.
Check yourself
- Give two qualities of a good listener.
- How should you begin a telephone call to the school office?
- Why should you take turns in a discussion?
Show answers
- Any two: pays attention, does not interrupt, looks at the speaker, asks questions.
- Greet politely and say who you are, e.g. "Good morning, this is Tariro from Grade 7B."
- So everyone can share ideas and be respected.
