Fabric care, finishes and textile enterprise

ZIMSEC O Level · Textile Technology and Design · Form 3, Form 4

Fabric care

  • Care labels show washing temperature, bleaching, drying, ironing and dry-cleaning symbols.
  • Cotton: hot wash, hot iron. Wool: hand wash cool, dry flat. Synthetics: cool wash, cool iron.
  • Remove stains promptly using the right method (cold water for blood, absorbent powder for grease).

Fabric finishes

Added to improve appearance or performance: shrink resistance, crease resistance, waterproofing, flame retardance, stain resistance, mercerising (lustre in cotton), brushing and printing.

Colour

Dyeing (yarn, fabric or garment) and printing (block, screen, digital). Traditional techniques: tie-dye and batik.

Textiles and the environment

Recycling and upcycling old clothes, choosing durable fabrics and reducing waste in cutting.

Textile enterprise

Opportunities: school uniform production, tailoring and alterations, embroidery, bags and household textiles. Cost a product: fabric + thread + notions + labour + overheads, then add profit.

Worked example: Making a school skirt uses fabric US$4.00, zip and thread US$1.00 and labour US$2.00. Add 20% profit. Find the selling price.

Total cost = 4.00 + 1.00 + 2.00 = 7.00

Selling price = 7.00 × 1.2 = US$8.40

Exam tip: When asked about a finish, give its effect AND why it is useful for a named product.
