Body measurements
Bust/chest, waist, hips, back length, shoulder width, sleeve length and garment length. Measure over light clothing with the tape snug but not tight.
Patterns
- Commercial patterns include an envelope with fabric amounts, a layout guide and markings.
- Pattern markings: grain line, place-to-fold, notches, darts, buttonholes, seam allowance (often 1.5 cm).
- Drafting a basic block from measurements, then adapting it for style.
Layout and cutting
Press fabric; fold right sides together; place grain lines parallel to the selvedge; pin; cut with shears using long smooth strokes; transfer markings with chalk or a tracing wheel.
Order of construction (e.g. a skirt)
Darts → side seams → zip → waistband → hem → fastenings → final press.
Fitting
Try on at stages and adjust for length and fit.
Pressing
Press each seam as you sew, using the correct iron setting for the fibre.
Exam tip: Write a logical order of work; examiners mark sequence as well as techniques.
