- Fibre science Textile fibres are long-chain polymers. Properties depend on chain length, orientation and crystallinity: highly oriented, crystalline fibres are strong but less absorbent and less elastic.
- Yarn and fabric technology Opening, cleaning, carding, combing (for fine yarns), drawing, roving and spinning (ring and open-end spinning). Twist (S or Z) and twist level affect strength, handle and lustre. Yarn count systems (tex = grams per 1 000 m).
- Colour, dyeing, printing and finishing Colour theory (hue, value, saturation), colour harmonies and psychology; colour fastness to washing, light and rubbing.
- Pattern drafting and garment technology Body measurements, size charts, ease allowances, and the use of anthropometric data in standard sizing.
